Abebaw Ayalew Gella holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from Addis Ababa University, Department of History. Since 1998 he has been teaching history and art history at Addis Ababa University, Department of History and the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design. His research interest is the history of Ethiopian art and iconography of art of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. He has participated in many heritage conservation projects including the Menelik II Palace Restoration and Museum Development project in Addis Ababa; Conservation of megalithic steles of Tiya and the restoration and conservation of the mural paintings of St. Mark Church in Gojjam, Amhara region. From 2019 to 2021 Abebaw was appointed as Deputy Director General of the Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritages (ARCCH), now the Ethiopian Heritage Authority (EHA). From 2021 to present he is Director General of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority (EHA).
