Short Description
Main Objective
The project will protect the Entons Eyesus monastery, situated on one of Lake Tana’s smallest islands, from wave erosion and ensure a sustainable environment. The work will support the local community by sustaining tourism which is a vital source of income.
Outcomes
The Entons Eyesus monastery, situated on one of Lake Tana’s smallest islands, holds significant cultural and natural wealth, including historical buildings, manuscripts, and great biodiversity. However, the monastery and its surroundings face threats from destructive lake waves that endanger the monastery, its heritage, monks, and wildlife.
To safeguard these treasures, this project aims to protect the monastery from wave erosion and ensure a sustainable environment. By implementing measures to mitigate wave damage and preserve indigenous forests, bird habitats, and landscapes, the project seeks to secure the monastery and promote long-term environmental health and resilience. This endeavor not only protects cultural and natural assets but also supports the local community by sustaining tourism, a vital source of income.
The project is funded by our Africa Grants Program.
