Main Objective
Gasura village is located in Northern Rwanda and won the 2021 UNWTO award for best tourism village of the year. However modernisation and environmental changes have led to intangible heritage, heritage sites, and local cultural practices being gradually eroded.
Beyond the Gorillas Experience aims to combat this by empowering the local community to contribute towards preservation and encouraging them to participate in documenting their heritage. It will also provide conservation recommendations for heritage sites to protect them from deterioration, and leverage partnerships with local authorities, educational institutions, and cultural organizations. In essence, this project is a vital step towards preserving the intangible and tangible heritage, fostering community pride and identity, and creating economic opportunities, while promoting cultural awareness and education.
