Short Description
Main Objective
The Matendera ruins are a series of impressive stone structures, one of the largest concentrations of stone-built monuments in Zimbabwe. The ruins are thought to have been built around the same time as Great Zimbabwe and share many similar architectural features to the important monument. However, they are located in one of the driest regions in the country where there is very little employment and there is a need to encourage further sustainable development.
Great Zimbabwe University proposes to highlight the importance of the heritage site to the local community, researching and documenting local culture and providing publicity for the site, whilst also physically protecting the site through fencing.
Outcomes
Protected/fenced Matendera ruins
Empowered local community
Preserved history for future generations
