Short Description
Main Objective
The sacred forests/sacred streams are natural forests found in almost all the villages of Cameroon. For the population, these forests are home to the gods who protect or come to the aid of people in times of difficulty. It is where the dignitaries of the village or notables and chiefs commune with the gods and sometimes where the village secret societies hold their meetings. However, with the growing population, human pressure is now being exerted on all these sacred forests and streams with the axing of plants for monetary benefit, wood, timber, farming and burning of charcoal. The lack of awareness in terms of long term future benefits has also resulted in the destruction of sacred forests as has the influx of western cultures and conversion to other religions.
Youth Development Organization (YODO) there propose to work with the community to demarcate, map and restore 6 sacred forests/ streams in the Nkambe plateau. 25,000 native economic tree species will be nurtured and 5,000 Calliandra restoring over 40 hectares of sacred forest cleared for farming or fire. The Restor app shall be used to determine the number of plant species, animals, birds and amphibians in each of the six selected sacred forest; these will then be assessed and published in management guide for sacred forests.
