Short Description
Main Objective
Zegie peninsula hosts seven Christian monasteries which date from the 13th century. It is one of the main tourist sites in northern Ethiopia visited by many domestic and international tourists. Unfortunately, the lack of heritage materials has hindered the conservation and promotion of the site. Other problems include lack of knowledge and heritage interpretation skills among tour guides, and inadequacy of information about the heritage for tourist guides and tourists.
Bahir Dar University’s project proposes to design, purchase and install museum showcases along with interpretive signs for all the sites. These will be in English and the local language, Amharic, to appeal to a broad range of people and encourage a greater understanding of the site going forward.
Outcomes
Number of museum showcases purchased and installed
Increase in the number of visitors to the museum
Increased visitor experience
Increased economic gains for the monastery and the local community
Better preservation and conservation of the heritage
