Short Description
Main Objective
Ilukwe House is a wooden building over 100 years old, an early type of sustainable tropical architecture. However, it has never had any major restoration work, due to lack of funds.
Legacy the Historical and Environmental Interest Group of Nigeria propose to restore the structure and turn it into a research and exhibition venue; one of its focuses will be the history of the Nigerian railways.
The project will enhance the visitor and educational offering for researchers and internship students by providing library and research facilities and more display and exhibition space. It will also expand the capacity to offer specialised school visits, to offer researchers a conducive environment in which to engage with railway and architectural heritage and socioeconomic history. Ilukwe House would also show Nigerians the value of purposeful restoration.
Outcomes
Creation of a significant landmark in Lagos to serve as an example of preservation of built heritage.
Provision of library and research facilities for researchers and internship students, an exhibition space to offer specialised school visits, and exterior for wellbeing and sensory space for neurodiverse children.
Renewed focus on the history of Nigeria’s railway and its contribution to nation-building and national unity.
