Short Description
Main Objective
The historical town of Bagamoyo has faced drastic deterioration of its old buildings in the 20th and 21st centuries; the famous Indian street neighbourhood in Bagamoyo stone town has lost 82% of its historical buildings over one century. The deterioration is continuing and the heritage of the site is at risk of being lost if action is not taken.
The project proposes to tackle this deterioration in a number of ways; local people will be educated about the tourism opportunities available in their assets and empowered to create job opportunities and increase incomes. The project will further train local architectural technicians to work in rehabilitation and restoration of these structures whilst also conducting site documentation and developing a conservation plan and fund. The actual restoration of the structures will be conducted under the second phase of the project.
Outcomes
The project expects to conduct capacity building of local communities through creating awareness about the importance and means of preserving historical buildings that they own.
Local people will be sensitised about the available tourism opportunities within the stone town and how they can use their assets to engage in tourism activities.
The project will organize training on heritage architectural preservation and rehabilitation which will involve 5 youths (technicians) from the community for 6 months.
This activity is targeted to document the available old stone buildings in Bagamoyo as the way of preserving the records of this endangered stone town.
The project will prepare a 10 years Management and Conservation plan for Bagamoyo Old stone town.
