Short Description
Main Objective
The tradition of bark cloth making has been designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Uganda and it is recognised as a marker of specific social and cultural traditions. However, whilst bark cloth making is being increasingly encouraged in Uganda, issues such as climate change, youth hesitancy to engage with the craft, and premature felling of Mutuba trees is hampering the process. The Bukomansimbi Organic Tree Farmers Association are proposing to tackle this issue by spreading digital literacy amongst farmers and other stakeholders, encouraging the documentation and management of the Mutuba tree so promoting the traditional craft further.
Outcomes
Mobilise local communities to manage and protect trees, encouraging the continued promotion of Ugandan Bark cloth
Propel the craft of bark cloth from tradition to economics.
