Short Description
Main Objective
Bilikisu-Sungbo was a wealthy and childless widow, and a revered figure in Yoruba history. Her tomb is believed to be located in Oke-Eri, near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
The project’s primary objectives are to create a sustainable heritage site that not only conserves cultural heritage but also fosters economic development and community empowerment. This will be achieved by developing visitor infrastructure, including a visitor centre and accessible facilities, preserving historical artefacts, and offering educational programmes and events to engage visitors. By doing so, the project will attract tourists, generate income, and provide opportunities for local artisans and businesses. Additionally, the Bilikisu-Sungbo Heritage Site Project will emphasise inclusivity and collaboration. It will promote reconciliation by engaging with marginalised communities and foster gender balance by encouraging women’s participation in project activities.
Outcomes
Conservation of artefacts and sites including cultural practices associated with the Ijebu culture.
Documentation of oral histories, cultural traditions and historical narratives, creating a comprehensive archive of Yoruba cultural heritage.
Activities which will empower community members to take ownership of their cultural heritage.
The project emphasis on sustainability planning will ensure that the impact on cultural heritage preservation extends beyond the project duration.
The project will promote international awareness and collaboration in heritage preservation.
