Short Description
Main Objective
Bad practices and the loss of traditional fishing methods in the rivers of Nchwera and Ntungwa have contributed towards the loss of fish and sustainable income to the fishermen.
Banyabutumbi Cultural Heritage Organisation’s project proposes to encourage the conservation of traditional fish species that are found in rivers of Nchwera and Ntungwa, as well as conservation of this river itself. Actions such as the promotion of traditional fishing baskets will challenge the practice of using poison as a fishing method and help conserve fish and other aquatic animals. Community members will also be mobilised to build trenches and river bunks to stop further flooding. Finally, the community will be educated on which habits are contributing to the degradation of the river and encouraged to formulate by-laws which will guide community usage of river Nchwera going forward. It is hoped that these actions will help to halt further damaging practices and encourage sustainability.
Outcomes
- Adoption of traditional fishing baskets by all fishermen and women in the rivers connected to Lake Edward.
- Prevention of flooding from the Nhcwera River to protect the surrounding communities.
- Equal participation of both women and men in traditional fishing practices, leading to increased household income.
- Complete elimination of harmful practices such as fish poisoning, bushfires, sand mining, and open defecation in the river.
- Establishment of active village committees to oversee sustainable fishing and river conservation efforts.
