Short Description
Main Objective
The Alamanding Foundation’s proposed project seeks to complete the construction of a traditional Mandinka homestead in Juffureh, building on an already completed Fulani compound, as part of a broader effort to preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage of the Mandinka and Fula communities in the Niumi District. Using traditional materials and building techniques, the homestead will function as both a museum and an educational resource centre, offering immersive insights into rural Gambian life. The project also includes the installation of a solar-powered borehole to provide water and electricity to the site. In parallel, 12 members of the community and local stakeholders, including tour guides, museum staff, and tourism officials, will receive training in oral history collection, heritage interpretation, and cultural tourism marketing.
This project was supported through HerMaP Gambia, implemented by HERITΛGE and co-funded by the European Union and the Mellon Foundation, as part of the Africa Grants Program.
