Short Description
Main Objective
YouthFUL’s project seeks to protect and revitalise the historic Jinja Railway Station, built in 1928 as part of Uganda’s colonial-era railway network connecting the country to East Africa. Once a vital hub for transport and trade in Jinja and the wider region, the station has over time fallen into neglect and deterioration.
The project aims not only to restore the station itself but also to promote sustainable development in the surrounding community. This will be achieved through several initiatives: creating green belts around the site to combat desertification and enhance biodiversity; offering heritage conservation training to local residents so they can actively contribute to the station’s care and long-term maintenance; installing solar panels to reduce energy costs and promote renewable energy use; and developing an eco-friendly village that supports community activities while attracting eco-tourism. In addition, a historic worker’s cottage will be carefully restored and adapted for new uses, ensuring its continued relevance while preserving its heritage.
All activities will be guided by recognised conservation standards, safeguarding both the historical importance of the site and its environmental significance for future generations.
