Short Description
Main Objective
The project aims to safeguard and revitalise the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of El-Quseir by integrating it into sustainable community development and tourism. While Egypt’s cultural focus has long been centred on monumental restoration, this initiative highlights the importance of everyday cultural heritage, including stories, traditions, crafts and performances, that form the living identity of the local community.
The project seeks to document and promote these cultural elements through a community-centred approach that includes awareness workshops and the development of new cultural tourism products. By equipping local residents, particularly youth and potential tour guides, with the skills and knowledge to share their heritage, the project fosters a deeper sense of ownership and pride.
Outcomes
Increased awareness and appreciation of El-Quseir’s intangible cultural heritage among local residents.
Documentation and preservation of local traditions, stories, crafts, and practices.
Training of community members in heritage documentation and cultural tourism services.
Development of tourism activities that highlight local culture and contribute to the economy.
Empowerment of local tour guides and entrepreneurs, with improved employment prospects.
Creation of a replicable model for inclusive, heritage-based tourism development in other parts of Egypt.
Revenue reinvested into both the programme and the local community to ensure long-term sustainability.
