Short Description
Main Objective
The ElleSolaire Cultural Academy project aims to empower the communities of the Saloum Islands in Senegal to preserve their centuries-old cultural and environmental heritage. This includes sacred baobab trees, shell mounds, ancestral homes and traditional practices. Facing the threat of unsustainable modern tourism and land exploitation, the project provides solar kits to light cultural sites, support access to clean water and enable women’s groups to start income-generating activities. Through training, awareness campaigns and collaboration with local leaders, the project strengthens the community’s ability to defend their land, promote their identity and build a sustainable future rooted in respect for tradition and nature.
Outcomes
-
Solar kits were provided to light ancestral sites and enable safer community gatherings and environmental monitoring.
-
Women’s groups were trained and equipped to launch new income-generating activities using solar-powered tools.
-
Awareness workshops and training academies helped preserve ancestral knowledge and strengthen local leadership.
-
Cultural heritage was protected through community-led conservation efforts and formal commitments from stakeholders.
