Short Description
Main Objective
The project aims to establish a cultural centre in Mukekete, a rural village in the Ndiyona Constituency, to preserve, protect, and promote the intangible cultural heritage of the VaGciriku kingdom and surrounding communities. The cultural centre will serve as a hub for social exchange, education, and the transmission of traditional crafts, including basketry, jewellery-making, pottery, and metallurgy, which are central to the region’s cultural identity.
The project focuses on empowering vulnerable and impoverished segments of the community, particularly elderly women, by teaching them how to produce and sell traditional crafts. Additionally, the centre will incorporate a traditional apprenticeship model, where younger members of the community, can learn these crafts and engage in cultural performances such as dance and music. By doing so, the project aims to create sustainable income opportunities and employment for the local population, helping to lift them out of extreme poverty.
The cultural centre will also promote cultural tourism by engaging both local and international visitors in the region’s rich intangible heritage, with activities such as craft sales, traditional performances, and cultural cuisine.
