Short Description
Main Objective
The Lake Eyasi Basin in Tanzania includes notable sites such as the Mumba Rock Shelter which reveals early modern human remains, symbolic artefacts, and rock art. The region is also home to indigenous communities, including the Hadzabe and Datoga, whose traditional lifeways are integral to its living heritage.
However, these invaluable assets are increasingly threatened by agricultural expansion, construction, environmental degradation, and climate change. This project therefore proposes a holistic, community-led approach to conservation through digital documentation, 3D modelling, geospatial mapping, exhibitions, and training in site management and tour guiding. Public awareness campaigns and stakeholder workshops will build local capacity, strengthen cultural identity, and support sustainable heritage-based tourism. Ultimately, the project aims to protect the Lake Eyasi Basin’s cultural legacy while promoting rural development and long-term stewardship by local communities.
