Short Description
Main Objective
Besease is a historic settlement in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti region. The community has many unique heritage places which relate to the significant political history of the Asante kingdom. Notable amongst these unique heritage places include; the Ejisu – Besease Asante Traditional Building (Tano Yaw Shrine) World Heritage Site, the ancestral home and burial site of the legendary Nana Yaa Asantewaa, and several other landmark structures including a 106 years old cocoa shed building.
The cocoa shed stood empty for many years but plans were approved in 2022 to turn the building into a contemporary art gallery. The structure will be used mainly for exhibitions that will promote Asante traditional architectural heritage and a brief narrative of the Nana Yaa Asantewaa will be highlighted in the gallery. This is particularly important because part of her relates to the shrine which is located on the premises of the Old Building.
Outcomes
Conservation of tangible heritage.
Improved stewardship/protection for the building.
Revenue generation for continued conservation.
