Short Description
Main Objective
The “Living the Heritage in Vieux Grand Port” project in Mauritius is a pilot initiative by Our Heritage Foundation that seeks to preserve and revitalise the traditional knowledge of boat making, known locally as pirog construction. Rooted in the fishing heritage of Vieux Grand Port, the project focuses on documenting traditional boat making techniques and transmitting this knowhow to younger generations through a twenty day practical workshop. With fewer than ten people across the island holding this knowledge, including only one elderly practitioner in the village, the project addresses an urgent need to safeguard this intangible cultural heritage. It will also raise awareness, promote community engagement and support the development of sustainable livelihoods based on cultural identity and craftsmanship. The initiative integrates documentation, training, and heritage promotion in an inclusive and community led framework.
