Short Description
Main Objective
The project is dedicated to documenting and preserving the unique cultural heritage of the Haratin, a community believed to be descendants of enslaved individuals in Mauritania, through the study of two ancient musical and oral traditions: Bondja and Medh.
While Bondja speaks for the mundane daily life of the Haratin and documents their journeys in the oasis and caravan life, Medh documents their spiritual aspirations and the way they created and practiced their spirituality. Despite recent demarcations, Bondja remains a female creation and practice, while Medh remains a male creation and practice.
By interviewing informants, gathering texts and making recordings in the Adrar region of Mauritania, the project aims to provide valuable insights into the ancient musical and oral traditions of Haratin community, preserving this intangible heritage and facilitating access through an Open Access archive.
