Short Description
Main Objective
The Muanenguba Mountain Forest Area (MMFA) has numerous springs and lakes and is considered by the Bakossi people as home of their ancestral spirits. In the forest, area, locals carry out annual sacrifices, rich biodiversity is supported and medicinal plants are harvested. However, deforestation caused by shifting cultivation, logging, felling for fuel wood, hunting, bush burning, expansion of settlements, and over grazing is fast eroding the area requiring protection.
AJEMALEBU Self Help (AJESH) propose to sensitise, inform and mobilise the local communities on the need to protect the forest area. They will also train data collectors and assist them in collecting biological, cultural, linguistic, spatial and socioeconomic data. Maps will be produced to locate cultural heritage sites and students will be educated through Environmental Clubs in schools. Tree seedlings (native species) will be nursed and transplanted in degraded lands for ecological restoration.
Outcomes
Increased awareness amongst community members and schools on the need to protect their cultural and linguistic values.
A better understanding amongst communities of the need to understand their heritage and its sustainable protection.
Maps and data collected made available and useable for future reference.
