Short Description
Main Objective
Nyero rock paintings are archaeological sites located in eastern Uganda in Kumi District. They are among the most important rock art in Uganda being unique pre-historic paintings, which date to well before 1250 AD. The paintings enrich the identity of the Iteso of eastern Uganda, and Africa as a whole. However, the rock art has continued to suffer degradation due to rock quarrying and increasing deforestation which is leading to soil erosion.
The project seeks to improve heritage preservation knowledge and stewardship among local households by changing community negative habits that are harmful to the heritage existence such as rock quarrying and deforestation, it will then promote restoration activities. This will be achieved through radio talk shows on the importance of this heritage to the hosting communities, schools, and government authorities. Additionally, the project will hold sensitisation campaigns against rock quarrying, deforestation and bush burning on heritage existence and will establish and train heritage management committees to support in restoration activities.
