Short Description
Main Objective
Rural Women and Youth in Tooro Sub region encounter significant barriers to accessing education and employment, limiting their access to stable income sources. The project, run by Tooro Gallery, will tackle this by leveraging their unique skills and cultural knowledge in traditional crafts and heritage sectors to help them create sustainable livelihoods. Around 100 women and youths will be identified to receive weaving and crafting training, including environment protection training. Central to the strategy is the revitalization of traditional baskets (Orugali, Endiro Ekitaro and chairs (Enteebe Zo’Omuguugu), facing a decline due to aging knowledge holders. Then Tooro Gallery Foundation shall work with other groups and other artisans to create viable markets for these traditional crafts and raise awareness about their cultural significance.
Outcomes
The skills development training will ensure the transmission of traditional crafting techniques from older generations to young women and youth thus preventing the loss of traditional crafting skills.
The project provides opportunities for women and youth to generate income through the production and sale of traditional crafts. This will contribute to the economic empowerment within the community.
The project also encourages environmentally sustainable practices.
