Tim Healing,
has over thirty years’ experience working as a project manager and has a professional background in project management, community and NGO development. He specializes in the coordination and support of cultural heritage and community based social action projects in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asian regions. He has particular experience working with local communities, national and regional museums, heritage institutions, government and non-governmental organizations. In 2018, he left The Metropolitan Museum of Art to create, Tim Healing Project Management LLC as an independent project consultant, supporting a number of international institutions and organizations plan and run their cultural heritage preservation projects. To this end, he continues to work as the main coordinator for the Whiting Foundation funded photographic documentation project and works closely on heritage projects with The Heritage Management Organization, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Slemani Museum, Suleymaniyah, The Egyptian Heritage Rescue Fund, Wallach Art Gallery, The Antiquities Coalition, ALIPH and the Council on Library and Information Resources among others.

This 5-day course on community tourism offers a comprehensive exploration of the principles, practices, and strategies necessary to successfully develop and manage tourism initiatives that benefit local communities. Throughout the course, participants will learn how to create sustainable tourism projects that generate income, promote cultural exchange, and preserve local heritage. Key topics include understanding legal and ethical considerations, developing homestays and alternative accommodations, ensuring food and hygiene standards, fostering respectful staff and tourist interactions, and minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, participants will gain insights into how to support small businesses, promote inclusive tourism, and manage income generation and community economics, with a strong focus on keeping income within the community.
The course is designed to be interactive and engaging, featuring a mix of discussions, PowerPoint presentations, and group exercises to support the learning process. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate, share ideas, and apply their knowledge through practical activities, such as designing cultural trips, developing project proposals, and action plans, and addressing challenges related to tourism management. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the tools, strategies, and confidence to implement community tourism projects that prioritize sustainable development, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment.
